Future Plans
Information below is subject to changes.
Home Lab
Expected start: rolling start, plans in progress
Synopsis:
Home labbing refers to the practice of running servers, networking gear, and software at home to experiment with technologies like virtualization, networking, and automation. This project will be made up of a bunch of smaller projects that will be connected together, all of which will be documented along the way.
Purpose:
- Grants the ability to run models and simulations away from home, without the need to carry bulky and expensive hardware by remote accessing a server.
- Form a network for personal use and future projects.
- Increase experience with servers and hardware.
Goals & Challenges:
- The proposed theme is cassette futuristic. I like the style and it gives me an excuse to integrate analogue technology into the design. Additionally, I have space themed naming conventions for my electronic devices, and that trend will continue with this project.
- Home labbing has a steep learning curve. This is not something to worry too much about as there are plenty of forums and documentation on just about any related topic.
- As part of this project, I intend to use either NixOS or Linux From Scratch for the various devices in the network.
Building a custom Laptop
Expected start: within the next 5-10 years
Synopsis:
I want to take on the challenge of designing and assembling a laptop from scratch. All the hardware will likely be commercial parts. The casing, motherboard, and keyboard will likely be designed and printed/milled.
Purpose:
- The laptop is going to be designed to maximize security. This is the laptop that will be used to securely remote access the home lab.
- The Laptop will also be designed to be comfortable to use, with modular parts for easy repair.
- This will be a fun challenge.
Goals & Challenges:
- The software will be completely customized. Linux From Scratch would be a good option for the operating system, but this can be subject to change. Coreboot or Libreboot will likely be used for the BIOS.
- The keyboard will be mechanical. This is to make the keyboard more comfortable to use.
- Quality microphone and speaker will be integrated, but they will have switches to completely disconnect them when desired.
- The Wifi card will also be able to disconnected with a switch. Will consider the idea of satellite connection.
- The camera will be a separate component that can be plugged into a custom port. This means a high quality camera can be used, without adding additional bulk to the computer profile.
